Posting automatically: what planning tools can and can't do

Anyone who runs social media channels asks this sooner or later: is there a tool that publishes my posts automatically? Then I plan the week on Monday and the rest runs by itself.

The short answer: yes, there is. Almost every planning tool can post automatically, maebe included. The honest answer is longer, though. Because automatic posting often comes with a bit of wishful thinking, and sometimes with a promise no provider can really keep.

How automatic posting works

Automatic posting runs through interfaces that the platforms provide themselves, usually called an API. Through them, the tool hands over image, video and text, and the platform publishes the post.

The important part: Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and LinkedIn provide these interfaces themselves, and they're the same for every provider. No tool gets special access. There are small differences between providers, because not every tool builds in every feature. The big limits, though, are the same everywhere, no matter what anyone promises.

And these interfaces can consistently do less than the app itself.

What's missing when you post automatically

A few examples from Instagram and TikTok that you'll notice most in everyday work. All of them are stated in the platforms' official documentation.

So the picture isn't black and white. It depends on what your post needs.

What about reach?

A persistent myth says that posts published through a tool get less reach. There is no official evidence for that. Instagram head Adam Mosseri has repeatedly said the opposite: scheduled posts neither help nor hurt reach.

There is an indirect effect worth taking seriously, though. If a Reel goes out without the right trending sound, or a Story without a link sticker, it may be missing exactly what would have carried it. Not because the algorithm punishes automatic posts, but because the post simply does less.

Posting yourself, without the hassle

That's why posting yourself isn't the old-fashioned option, but often the better one. The reason many people avoid it is a different one: it's tedious. Finding media in a folder, getting it onto your phone in the right order, picking the right version, copying the caption out of an email.

When automatic posting is the right choice

Automatic posting shines where a post is finished and doesn't need any app extras:

• carousels and image posts that work without music,
• posts at fixed times when nobody wants to be on their phone, early in the morning or at the weekend, say,
• several platforms at once,
• teams where a post should simply go out once it's approved, without anyone touching it again.

Why isn't Social Connect simply included in every plan? Because we want to keep the plans affordable. Whether automatic posting matters to you at all is your call. Your tool shouldn't lock you in

The best answer to "automatic or yourself?" is: it depends on the post. The carousel for Tuesday morning can go out automatically. The Reel with the trending sound, you post yourself. Both should be possible in the same tool, without having to decide once and for all.
